One way to help students stay actively engaged with text is to provide specific tasks that help draw focus to the details. And online learning offers a lot of tools for that!
For example, after a preliminary conversation about lists and headings (e.g. “These are the things to buy at the store: Milk, eggs, bread, and cake.”), a TorahTutors student used WebEx’s highlighting tool to break down part of the Torah’s introduction to Noach.
Once the pieces of the verse were identified, it became clear that the Torah (apparently) interrupts between the list heading (“These are the children of Noach”) and the list itself (“Shem, Cham, and Yafet”). At that point, the student was ready to explore some answers – including the two Rashi offers – and some broader lessons we might learn from this textual nuance.
What text would you or your child like to dig into?
