A TorahTutors student learning the Song of Deborah (Judges 5), with the help of commentaries, followed the prophetess’s descriptions of who did and didn’t help in the battle against Sisera. Deborah commends the tribes who sent soldiers and reproaches those who didn’t, emphasizes how strongly the odds were skewed in Sisera’s favor – and expresses her gratitude to God for helping them win against all odds.
During a week when many Americans are giving extra thought to expressing gratitude, we especially appreciated Deborah’s model of thanking the people who helped and acknowledging the Divine assistance that carried them through despite those who didn’t.
