A TorahTutors tutor recently started with a new student and has taken to singing the parshiyot of the Torah with him, in order, at the beginning of each session.
This tuneful technique is a time-honored tradition; in fact, the tune they’re using is the same one the tutor was taught as a child! And of course, we can see all the way back in the time of the Mishna how various mnemonic strategies hvae been used to preserve oral traditions. With so much Torah to learn, it’s important to have practical ways to hold onto it!
Gaining familiarity with general knowlege like the order of the parshiyot will be invaluable as the student develops more and more tools for independent learning. And it’s fun, too.
