Finders Keepers??
A TorahTutors tutor introduced the study of hashavat aveidah, returning lost objects, with (1) a saying:
“Find a penny, pick it up, and all day long you’ll have good luck!”, and (2) a question:
But are you allowed to pick up that penny?
Maybe what you should do for “good luck” is return the penny to its rightful owner!
The discussion developed further with the addition of other scenarios:
What if it’s not a penny?
How about a dime, or a dollar? One hundred dollars? One thousand dollars?? (Talk about good luck!)
What if it’s not money at all, but an object?
A glove? A sandwich?
A box of cereal?
A book? A television? An iphone?
A teddy bear?
How do you decide if you can keep what you found, or if you have to return it??
With those questions buzzing, the student was ready to embark on her first Gemara study – the second chapter of Bava Metzia – and delve into halachic thought.
What questions would you or your child like to explore further, through study of Jewish texts?
