One of our amazing tutors recently heard from a former student. They hadn’t learned together since the student switched schools, but she was on break and wanted to use some of that free time to learn with her TorahTutors tutor. Because of course she did. Because that’s how great our tutors are. 😉
Although their previous topics had focused on Tanach and halacha, this time around, they are spending some time on Jewish history (which of course includes Tanach) – in particular, learning about Israel.
They began with the well-known question and answer in Rashi at the beginning of Bereishit: Why does the Torah start with creation? To send a message that God created the world and could give it to whomever He chose – and He chose the ancestors of the Jewish people for the land of Israel.
They also looked at three Biblical accounts of purchasing land in Israel (Ma’arat Hamachpela, Shechem, and Har Habayit), noting that these three areas are among those contested most hotly today despite having been purchased. This led to meaningful discussions about the interplay of Divine promise, personal effort, and questions of what truly determines ownership of the Promised Land.
We’re so proud of this student for pursuing “extra” learning, proud of the tutor for her thoughtful lessons and dedication to her students, and proud to share this real Torah from real TorahTutors sessions.
